Before installing solar panel on your flat roof, it is necessary to obtain permission from the Fire Department as well as the Department of Buildings. The Fire Department must give you permission to depart from fire code. To do this, you will need to apply for an exception. At the moment, your application can only be filed by paper. However, electronic filing will likely become possible by 2019.
Plan before you install
You should plan in advance if you want to install solar panels on your flat roof. Make sure that the solar panels fit snugly and have enough space for ventilation. They shouldn't interfere with roof functions. The best racking system will maximise the amount of solar power you get from your panels.
There are two primary methods of installing solar panels to flat roofs. You can either mount them directly into the roof, or use a ballasted system that secures them with weights. You can also use hybrid systems that combine both of these methods.
Take into account wind speed
The wind speed is an important consideration when installing solar panels to a flat roof. The performance of your panel installation may be affected if it is subject to strong winds. You should increase the thickness of the racking systems that are used to install solar panel panels if you live in an area subject to high winds.
To calculate wind speed, you must know the direction the prevailing winds are blowing. Figure 29.3-1 of ASCE 7-16 gives the prevailing wind speed and direction for buildings with a flat roof. You can calculate the weight of your panels and the amount you will generate electricity by using this information.
Consider tilted mounting system
If you have a flat roof, you may want to consider a tilted mounting system for your solar panels. A tilted mounting system for solar panels can help them produce more energy and it can be easily adjusted after they have been installed. In some cases, solar panels that have less than two degrees of tilt may not be covered by warranty companies.
Another consideration is whether trees will shade the solar panels, which can lower the energy output. If the sun is shining through your roof, it's better to have a flat roof. Additionally, a flat roof is visually more pleasing than one with an angled roof.
Get planning permission
Before you start installing solar panels on your flat roofing, contact the local planning office. This office can help you determine if you need planning permission. They also provide guidance about how to apply. You will typically receive a decision within eight week after you submit your application. If the planning officer finds that your proposals will create a problem in the area, they may refuse to approve your application. If this happens you can appeal the decision and consult a reputable company that will assist you.
You can start the solar panel installation once you have obtained planning permission. It is the same process as installing solar panels on a pitched roof, but you need to follow local planning laws and obtain the necessary building permits before you can start work. This will prevent you from causing problems with your neighbors and the council.
