Installing solar panels for flat roofs

ene solar

Before you can install solar panels on a flat roof, you will need to get permission from the Fire Department or the Department of Buildings. You must apply for a variance to the Fire Department to be granted special permission to alter fire code. At the moment, your application can only be filed by paper. However, electronic filing will likely become possible by 2019.

Before you start installing

Make sure to plan ahead if your flat roof will be covered by solar panels. You will need to ensure your panels fit correctly and that there is enough ventilation. They shouldn't interfere with roof functions. You can get the most out of your solar panels by choosing the right racking system.

There are two primary methods of installing solar panels to flat roofs. You have two options: mount them directly onto your roof or use a ballasted solution that secures them using weights. There are also hybrid systems, which combine both methods.

Wind speed is important

When installing solar panels on a flat roof, wind speed is a critical consideration. The performance of your panel installation may be affected if it is subject to strong winds. Consider increasing the thicknesses of the racking systems you use to install solar panels in high wind areas.

The direction of the prevailing winds is required to calculate wind speed. ASCE 7-16's Figure 29.3-1 gives the direction and wind speed for flat roof buildings. This information can be used to estimate the weight and amount of electricity generated by your solar panels.

Consider tilted mounting system

A tilted mounting system is a good option for flat roofs. You can adjust the tilt of your panels to increase their energy production. In some cases, solar panels that have less than two degrees of tilt may not be covered by warranty companies.

The shade that trees can provide to the solar panels could also be a consideration. This could affect their ability to produce more energy. If there aren't trees blocking the sun, a flat roof is better. Additionally, a flat roof is visually more pleasing than one with an angled roof.

Get planning permission

Before you can install solar panels onto your flat roof you need to contact the appropriate planning office. The office will tell you if you require planning permission, and give you guidance on how to apply for it. A decision usually comes within eight weeks of you submitting the application. If the planning officer finds that your proposals will create a problem in the area, they may refuse to approve your application. If this happens, the planning office may reject your application. You can appeal and get assistance from a trusted solar company.

After you have been granted planning permission for solar panel on a flat roof you can move forward with installation. The process is similar to installing solar panels on pitched roofs, but you must follow local planning laws and get the required building permits before beginning work. This will allow you to avoid any potential problems with the council, your neighbours, or even with the government.
